In regards to your point about asking further questions - it's possible to include a final question at the end of a questionnaire, which asks if the referee is happy to be contacted at a time that’s convenient for them, if any further detail is required. This offers referees a chance to opt in to being contacted at a time that works for them and can make for a great opportunity to reach out where necessary and appropriate.
