Stack Overflow for Teams Overview

What is Stack Overflow for Teams?

Stack Overflow for Teams is a knowledge-sharing platform that facilitates the collection, curation, and dissemination of your company’s knowledge. We do this by providing a platform that’s familiar to developers, embedded into developer workflows, and closes the distance between people and the knowledge they need, using gamification to encourage contribution and engagement. The community-based platform connects knowledge seekers and domain experts through an easy-to-use Q&A tool developers already know with additional functionality built in to ensure institutional knowledge is validated, accessible, and up-to-date both now and in the future. OverflowAI, our new GenAI-powered features for Stack Overflow For Teams Enterprise, helps connect technologists to solutions faster by doing the heavy lifting of searching for technical and institutional knowledge by surfacing and sourcing answers in natural ways, in the environments developers work in.

What problems is Stack Overflow for Teams solving and how is that benefiting you?

SO for teams helps to sync and share information between teams in a bigger department as it allows to lookup solutions to re-occuring problems. It's easier to ask a question about missing links than to think of what specific information should be put into documentation upfront.

Documenting software or systems in general can never cover all use-cases and will leave blind spots that people can easily fill by asking and answering questions in SO for teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Stack Overflow for Teams?

Most developers have experience of recording and accessing information about development decisions, gotchas, etc via a wiki page. However, my own experience of working with wikis is that capturing information ecomes too much like homework and that very soon the wiki goes out of date, despite everyone’s best intentions. Also, the information recorded is what one person thinks other people will need to know, which is often not what they actually need when the actual problem.

Stack Overflow for Teams provides the ability to organise knowledge in a way that corresponds to how humans best gain knowledge: through the asking and answering of questions. One does not have to wade through someone else's braindump in a wiki page looking for relevant information. Rather, the information contained in Stack Overflow for Teams in targeted to specific needs.

This not to say that SO for Teams obviates the need for a wiki. Rather, it complements a wiki. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Stack Overflow for Teams?

The main downside to using Stack Overflow for Teams is getting people to remember to use it to ask questions. But this is something that can be overcome by training and reference to questions that have been previously answered via SO. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Stack Overflow for Teams:

I would suggest starting small with adding a few questions, answering them, and then getting feedback from the team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Stack Overflow for Teams solving and how is that benefiting you?

Above all, Stack Overflow for Teams has been a good tool for onboarding new developers. Before asking another team member a question they can check whether it has already been asked in Stack Overflow. This reduces the cost of onboarding new developers in terms of the time needed from other developers.

Further, a benefit of using Stack Overflow for Teams is the ability to build up an answer that reflects the understanding of the whole team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
