Arcserve UDP Overview

What is Arcserve UDP?

Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) delivers data protection and disaster recovery for every type of workload. Backed by heterogeneous, image-based technology that protects to and from any target, it’s the first of its kind to combine enterprise-ready features without the complexity of traditional enterprise solutions. Deployment modalities include software, physical appliances and hybrid cloud. Easily turn on and off capabilities as needed, and scale hybrid business continuity topologies, locally or over long distances with multiple sites, including service and cloud providers. Installation is done in a few clicks. Create data stores on the recovery point server, add the nodes you want to protect, a storage destination, and a plan. Back up to either a local machine or a central recovery point server (RPS) with global, source-side deduplication. A destination can be an RPS, local folder, or remote shared folder. Add network CIFS/NFS shares, Office 365 Exchange or SharePoint online nodes, and create related tasks. Perform jobs such as backup, virtual standby, instant VM and replicate. Perform a simple restore or a bare metal recovery. Fully protect a broad range of platforms, including: Windows, Linux, Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, Office 365 (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business), Microsoft Exchange, MS SQL, file servers, Microsoft IIS, Microsoft Active Directory, Oracle Database, PostgreSQL, VMware vSphere (agentless), Microsoft Hyper-V (agentless) and Nutanix AHV. What do you like best about Arcserve UDP?

Consistency of backups and notifications. We know when things fail and usually how to deal with them. The backups complete relatively quickly (as long as the internet connection onsite is good) and the onsite backups are quick as well. Sometimes, if the internet connection onsite is slow, I've seen backups take more than a week to complete, but they are consistent and actually complete once the data is transferred. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Arcserve UDP?

Support - it tends to be a little hard to reach. Once you get in touch with them though, they are pretty responsive. Would really like to see 24x7 support or at least extended hours during the week. Only M-F 8-5 is a little difficult when backup jobs often run during different times of the day/night. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Arcserve UDP:

ArcServe UDP has a bright future. It's a stable product, and consistent as far as backups go. When trouble arises with an agent, if the solution is anything besides "uninstall/reinstall" it tends to take a bit of time to get support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Arcserve UDP solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have had a few issues with Arcserve's cloud product (purchased from Zetta) with consistent backups on older machines. I know they support the older machines using the current agent, but we have had to delete and recreate multiple backup sets. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Arcserve UDP?

There are a lot of things I like best. I guess the first would be the simplicity in selecting what to backup, setting up the priority (the order of the backup), and confidence that the backups will run without issue. I've setup a full backup to run on Fridays, then an incremental backup the rest of the days of the week. Keeps the backup running quickly and efficiently. But mostly, I like the ease in restoring data when necessary. I like the option of restoring to the original folder, or I can opt to restore to a new folder. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Arcserve UDP?

Installing the agents on the various servers is a little tedious. When I update the software, I have to update the agents on each server. And some servers need multiple agents, like the Exchange server. Since it's a VM, it has the virtual agent, exchange agent and client agent. I would like Arcserve to figure out how to make the software agent-less. This would make installing and updating the software easier to do. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Arcserve UDP:

Give it a try and see how easy it is to use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Arcserve UDP solving and how is that benefiting you?

I get consistent, quick backups from all our servers that are part of the backup process, and it has the intelligence built in to communicate with applications like Exchange to keep the server clean.
