Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) Overview

What is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you up to focus on your apps so you can give them the better performance, availability, security, and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on 6 familiar database instances: Amazon Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database and SQL Server engines. This means that the code, applications, and tools you already use today with your existing databases can be used with Amazon RDS. Amazon RDS automatically patches the database software and backs up your database, storing the backups for a user-defined retention period and enabling point-in-time recovery. You benefit from the flexibility of being able to scale the compute resources or storage capacity associated with your relational database instance via a single API call. In addition, Amazon RDS makes it easy to use replication to enhance availability and reliability for production databases. Amazon RDS for MySQL also enables you to scale out beyond the capacity of a single database deployment for read-heavy database workloads. As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no up-front investments required, and you pay only for the resources you use.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud?

I would say one cons, is that is not something maybe for small business, if you're beginning with your company, another host provider would be a better fit for you. Also, you have a certain knowledge to deliver a good, reliable good infrastructure. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

What I like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is its ability to simplify the management of relational databases with automated backups, scaling, and maintenance. This allows users to focus on application development without worrying about the underlying database infrastructure. The seamless integration with other AWS services and robust security features further enhance its appeal. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

What I dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is the potential for high costs, especially with large-scale deployments and additional features like read replicas and Multi-AZ configurations. Additionally, the limited customization options can be a drawback for those who need deep control over their database environment, and the complexity of managing multi-region deployments can be challenging. The risk of vendor lock-in is also a concern, making it difficult to migrate to other services in the future. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is solving several critical problems related to database management:

1. **Database Administration**: By automating routine tasks such as backups, patch management, and hardware provisioning, RDS reduces the administrative burden. This allows me to focus more on application development and less on maintaining the database infrastructure.

2. **Scalability**: RDS provides easy scalability for both compute and storage resources. This ensures that my database can grow with my application's needs without requiring significant downtime or manual intervention.

3. **High Availability and Reliability**: With Multi-AZ deployments, RDS ensures high availability and automatic failover, minimizing downtime and ensuring data integrity. This is crucial for maintaining a seamless user experience and safeguarding against data loss.

4. **Security**: RDS offers comprehensive security features, including encryption at rest and in transit, network isolation with Amazon VPC, and IAM integration for access control. This ensures that my data is secure and compliant with industry standards.

5. **Performance Optimization**: RDS is optimized for performance with various database engines, providing tuning and configurations specific to each engine. This results in improved query performance and faster response times for my applications.

By addressing these problems, Amazon RDS significantly enhances productivity, reduces operational costs, and improves the overall performance and reliability of my database systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

It is way more easier to configure and maintain, providing way lot options for scalability and redundancy. It is easy to implement and integrate with different services [mostly integrating with other aws services] Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Im not any disadvantages, thing i see as a slight disadvantage is cost of the service,, which get incured for event running a t2.micro rds instance for a month would cost arround 8 dollar. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

Instead of setting up servers localy, which cause issue for scalability and redundancies due to higher cost, by just setting up rds would solve the issue, just for an example setting up a global cluster, primary and secondary inside it with forward proxy or multi master replication, this kind of setup makes the architecture ready for a medium scale application in production with less cost compared to setting up localy | onprem. What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

in my experience, the customer support is not good of RDS as we have good customer support assciates for dealing with various other AWS resources Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

helping me to host my insurance based applications on my various AWS accounts. The management of RDS is relatively easier as compared to hosting your RDS in public cloud and managing is difficult compared to use in RDS. Following a shared responsibility is easier and better. What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

The ease of use to just provision the service, and focus on your code. the Implementation is very easy. You can enable number of features and extentions by just one click. The managed service, all the care is from AWS side, you just focus on the queries. You just use the connection string with password, which means easy integration. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

There are many plus points but for the negative side, you can consider the costing and some other very low side dislike points like when you are using the networking, you should be able to have prpoer idea of networking etc. The update sometimes also takes high time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

The deploymnet is fast for RDS, you are just focus on your code. I create a DB, then all done from AWS side, just pass DB name, password and connection string, whic is very easy rather than creating your own database on VM or ec2. One thing that has very likely for me is the backup which is managed by aws. You can also use aws lambda or aws backup service for the backup and restore purpose. What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

It has been 3 years of using the RDS Service, the best feature which I like is the autoscaling without any operational overhead.

As the traffic increases service will sacled up and then become on lower once traffic lows by this way the costing is pay as you go.

Huge metrics will be helpful in deciding the least configuration and How much sacling is required.

MIgration from on-permises server to AWS RDS was awesome. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Costing is somehow complex and expensive. Also some time when large no. of traffic on the server and performing the continuos querying with the Database will not given the point to autoscale that hand traffic due to which server gone away error will face. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

When we're using the mySql at on-permises server it increases the oprational overhead of the team to montior the capacity and memory to handle the traffic, tunning of the configuration on day-to-day basis, so by using this service all the things are automated and by which we're making sure the high time avalability of the application in terms of Databases. What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

The managed service with full care from AWS side, what you have to just use the service, rest of the managment is from AWS side. The implementation is very easy. You can avail Customer Support and can integrate with any application easily, just focus on your code. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

What I have come as a dislike part of AWS RDS from client side is that they are complaining against the cost. Next thing is the time when the service is getting on update and you cannot modify. One thing is to create a tunnel for the private DB is a challengin part. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

I don't care of the backups daily, I can use AWS backup service for RDS in case there is need to recover previous data. I just provision the service, create DBs in the server and use in my application which is saving my time rather than to manage on some other service like ec2, VM etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
