High durability with automatic replication
DocumentDB only supports a limited number of ec2 types, which is not flexible. Even though DocumentDB is MongoDB API compatible, it still doesn't support some of the MongoDB features, so it won't be easy to migrate a backend from Mongo to DocumentDB

Replication of RDS based db's is a bit time taking in my experience. SSH is not supported so Linux based environments is a challange. Also, RDS is very much centred around AWS so using another cloud service like ibm, gcc might be hard, though I have tested.
