Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) Overview

What is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you up to focus on your apps so you can give them the better performance, availability, security, and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on 6 familiar database instances: Amazon Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database and SQL Server engines. This means that the code, applications, and tools you already use today with your existing databases can be used with Amazon RDS. Amazon RDS automatically patches the database software and backs up your database, storing the backups for a user-defined retention period and enabling point-in-time recovery. You benefit from the flexibility of being able to scale the compute resources or storage capacity associated with your relational database instance via a single API call. In addition, Amazon RDS makes it easy to use replication to enhance availability and reliability for production databases. Amazon RDS for MySQL also enables you to scale out beyond the capacity of a single database deployment for read-heavy database workloads. As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no up-front investments required, and you pay only for the resources you use.

What do you like best about AWS Cloud?

AWS offers a wide range of services, from compute (EC2), storage (S3), and databases (RDS, DynamoDB), to more advanced tools like machine learning (SageMaker) and serverless computing (Lambda). This vast array of services makes AWS a one-stop-shop for most cloud computing needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud?

In some cases, users have experienced inconsistent performance with AWS, particularly in heavily used regions. While AWS has a strong global infrastructure, performance can vary depending on location and time of day Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud solving and how is that benefiting you?

Traditional IT infrastructures are often limited by physical hardware capacity, making it difficult to scale up or down based on demand. Solution: AWS offers elastic scalability with services like Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) and Auto Scaling, allowing businesses to automatically adjust resources based on traffic and usage, ensuring optimal performance without over-provisioning hardware. Benefit: This eliminates the need for large upfront investments in hardware and allows businesses to scale globally, ensuring availability and reliability even during peak usage periods. What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

I've used the AWS RDS service for my company's dev, uat, and production environment, RDS is very helpful in managing objects in the database because AWS RDS is fully managed service, so I don't need to continuously manage the operating system in the database, so I can focus on developing queries and objects in the database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Although the aws rds have many advantages, I also still face limitations when I use AWS RDS like some features in Oracle Database on premise, not yet available on AWS RDS, and also expensive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amazon RDS has a best RPO and RTO level, especially on multi-az, so I don't have to worry about the duration of downtime on my database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about AWS Cloud?

No doubt in it definitely the greatest and wonderful services it offers along with the clear UI and also each service has a small explanation in the AWS website.

While using it we the students some times get into trouble then the support that is provided is unmatchable by the other cloud services. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud?

The privacy and security issues.

Yes they are best for experts but, for the beginners like us its unbearable and difficult. We need a lot of time to invest to delete something and also the complete deletion might not happen, if we are even a little careless a lot of cost is imposed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud solving and how is that benefiting you?

The database and web app hosting. Its simple beautiful when you just dump the required pages or files for the website in S3 and follow the process of hosting that completes in 10 - 20 minutes. You can enjoy I website with the same experience that you get in the local server.

Also the storage for database, the hosting, the file storage bucket, the assistant and what not everything needed for the website is there. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Encryption and security are handled very carefully in RDS. If you want total encryption on the db itself and do not want AWS interference in encryption, AWS provides way-TDE support for MYSQL and Oracle dbs and you can have your own cloud HSM. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

I would say the way they offer RDS services. It is very confusing for new users to choose between Multi-AZ clusters and Aurora. Both are very different and work differently underhood. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have used RDS instances first, then switched to Multi-AZ, after to aurora, and now we are settled at aurora serverless. I would say the transition is very seamless. This process is well suits for small scaled companies who does not know when the spike in their users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon RDS offers excellent scalability and reliability, making it a great solution for handling databases in a cloud environment. The automated backups, ease of replication, and robust security features save a significant amount of time and reduce administrative overhead. Its ability to manage multiple database engines, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle, provides flexibility to adapt to specific project requirements. The user interface is intuitive, and the integration with other AWS services is seamless, enhancing the overall experience for developers and administrators alike. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

One downside of Amazon RDS is the limited control over the underlying infrastructure, which can be frustrating for users who need more custom configurations or performance optimizations. Additionally, the pricing can escalate quickly, especially for high-availability setups or when working with large-scale databases. Monitoring and logging, while generally effective, can be challenging to navigate and set up in detail without relying on additional AWS services like CloudWatch. What problems is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amazon RDS solves the complexity of managing and maintaining relational databases by automating tasks such as backups, patching, scaling, and replication. This frees up valuable time and resources that would otherwise be spent on database administration, allowing me to focus on development and business priorities. RDS also enhances database reliability and security by offering built-in monitoring, encryption, and multi-AZ deployments for high availability. The ease of scaling up or down depending on workload demands ensures cost efficiency, which has directly benefited our operations by providing robust database management without the overhead of manual intervention.
