Stack Overflow for Teams Overview

What is Stack Overflow for Teams?

Stack Overflow for Teams is a knowledge-sharing platform that facilitates the collection, curation, and dissemination of your company’s knowledge. We do this by providing a platform that’s familiar to developers, embedded into developer workflows, and closes the distance between people and the knowledge they need, using gamification to encourage contribution and engagement. The community-based platform connects knowledge seekers and domain experts through an easy-to-use Q&A tool developers already know with additional functionality built in to ensure institutional knowledge is validated, accessible, and up-to-date both now and in the future. OverflowAI, our new GenAI-powered features for Stack Overflow For Teams Enterprise, helps connect technologists to solutions faster by doing the heavy lifting of searching for technical and institutional knowledge by surfacing and sourcing answers in natural ways, in the environments developers work in.

What do you like best about Stack Overflow for Teams?

Stack Overflow for teams is a great tool. It's helping us to document some of our process and how to fix some problems that we have when developing. And for train new ones or when I new one arrive in the team, now we have a place where the new one can find answers for all kind of questions or, when the new team player have a doubt, it's just to ask and the integration with Microsoft Teams will share his doubt with the team that can quickly answer his questions... Now, the knowledge is not just in the heads of fews - is shared with everyone.

Its also great the options you have to tag some team members to answer the questions and all things that made Stack Overflow what it is for developers today. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Stack Overflow for Teams?

The tool is a little bit expansive. Other tools (like the tool to document things or about the settings to rate people) are just available in more expensive plans. That's ok but, I think that the tool to document things could be add in the basic plan and not just in the more expansive plans. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Stack Overflow for Teams:

If you have a lot of employers like devs and just some of these devs have the knowledge about how to do the things, it's time to use Stack Overflow for Teams. Your devs already know Stack Overflow, they will be confortable to start to ask questions and answer them. I think that it can save time and money for you if you consider to use Stack Overflow for Teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Stack Overflow for Teams solving and how is that benefiting you?

The knowledge about a lot of stuff was in the head of few developers. Now is shared with everyone and can be easy found and updated;

When new people arrive in the team, it was very hard to explain some things every time and each developer has his own steps to do some things. Now we have all documented in one place;

When we have some question about a component, API or how our software works but this is not our team area, we simple ask in Stack Overflow for teams and someone with this knowledge is ready to help us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Stack Overflow for Teams?

I appreciate how SO for Teams allows knowledge to built up and managed naturally without too much conscious effort from the team. The Q&A format feels natural and team members gravitate to this format to build up granular knowledge documentation in an easily searchable format. It's easy to direct people to try asking their questions in SO, where they will often discover existing answers in the process of formulating their question. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Stack Overflow for Teams?

Competing answers and the up/down voting mechanism work well for public Q&A but might not be the most useful feature for private team documentation stores. Also some team members don't engage with the Q&A format and instead try to link out of it to other knowledge stores -- it could be useful if SO for Teams could discourage this behaviour and somehow nudge team members to document the actual knowledge into it so it's organised and searchable for others. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Stack Overflow for Teams:

The most effective approach I've found so far is directing people's routine questions to SO for Teams, so that the knowledge accumulates organically. Technical staff are usually used to the SO format and are able to engage with it naturally without much instruction. In this way it works well as a way to document knowledge and keep it discoverable for people in future.

I would also suggest trying to discourage people from simply adding links in SO for Teams to other systems, and instead try to build up the knowledge documentation directly in SO for Teams.

Finally, one useful feature in SO for Teams that I make use of regularly is the ability to include images inside both the questions and answers. We routinely make use of PlantUML diagrams in our various repositories, and it's very easy to paste the generated UML images into questions and answers in order to clarify the knowledge being documented. It's a nice experience for people when they search for a question, and find an answer that includes visual diagrams of the explanation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Stack Overflow for Teams solving and how is that benefiting you?

Normally knowledge tends gets spread across different systems in random formats, and is difficult to search. People tend to ask the same questions frequently and each person has their own pet system and locations where they document things that are then not seen by others. The Q&A format in SO seems to be effective at naturally guiding people to document knowledge in a meaningful and granular way that is discoverable by other people without requiring strong instruction to make this happen. A familiar look and a nice editing interface. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Stack Overflow for Teams?

We don't use this as a Q&A site so much as a repository for documentation. So the insistence on 'answering' is a bit tiresome. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Stack Overflow for Teams:

If you want a Q&A site, this is perfect. If you want a living documentation repository it is fine, but with some niggles. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Stack Overflow for Teams?

It's a distinct, easy-to-navigate area for discussing any issues the team encounters, allowing people to log onto the website and give people a hand when they're ready. The ability to ask specific people questions is also convenient when you suspect there's someone most likely to know the answer. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Stack Overflow for Teams?

It's probably not the best place to ask a question when you urgently need an answer unless the people who can answer your question regularly browse it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Stack Overflow for Teams solving and how is that benefiting you?

I mainly use it for sharing expertise about how specific processes work or are used, especially when there's limited documentation available elsewhere. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
