Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) Overview

What is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you up to focus on your apps so you can give them the better performance, availability, security, and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on 6 familiar database instances: Amazon Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database and SQL Server engines. This means that the code, applications, and tools you already use today with your existing databases can be used with Amazon RDS. Amazon RDS automatically patches the database software and backs up your database, storing the backups for a user-defined retention period and enabling point-in-time recovery. You benefit from the flexibility of being able to scale the compute resources or storage capacity associated with your relational database instance via a single API call. In addition, Amazon RDS makes it easy to use replication to enhance availability and reliability for production databases. Amazon RDS for MySQL also enables you to scale out beyond the capacity of a single database deployment for read-heavy database workloads. As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no up-front investments required, and you pay only for the resources you use.

"Devops Engineer RDS review"
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

In fact, the number of MySQL experts you use to start and maintain a cluster is also high. A simple math you need to work - (number of people required to maintain (cost to them) and number of resources in RDS (as it is almost set up once). SLA End to End (Network to DB availability) Backups and restores are very reliable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

You have to take care of everything. Expertise in choosing the right EC2 with all fault tolerance mechanisms. One needs to figure out the security, scalability, network requirements and finally VM utilization for a DB. If I'm not mistaken, most people will be forced to choose a dedicated server model for DB servers. Backups and restores are another process that should be automated. If you consider cost as a factor, you can spend more in this case as well. So, there is no definite cost benefit to be precise. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"AWS RDS - Fully Managed Relational database service"
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

As it's an fully managed service so it's easy to setup and manage the DB infrastructure. Most of the administrative tasks such as DB backup, recovery , patching etc are being handled by RDS only. So teams productivity is high if we use RDS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Though I don't find any dislikes about RDS but sometimes if we use it extensively then costing is too high and sometimes scaling and downtime is also an issue with Amazon RDS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Evolutionary Database"
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

It provides excellent features like choosing any database engine and simplifies administration tasks and deployment. Scalability is insane, with very low latency and high availability. We can also migrate our database from on-premises to AWS cloud, providing security and cost optimization. I worked on different database technologies on various cloud platforms. After experiencing this, I could tell that the AWS RDS service is much easier and more efficient to work with than others. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

I just faced a difficulty when I was trying to configure the port number, username and password with the Spring boot application, as I could not able to see the properties of the database in the user interface; my suggestion would be to try to give the details of the database with port numbers, username and password with some authentication with a drop-down box as properties. Remaining everything is acceptable to me. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

RDS makes autoscaling much easier. Manual intervention is reduced thus reducing the number of man made errors. Replication is fast and it gives different options for different kinds of databases. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

The log management process of RDS doesn't provides a console where the logs can be analysed on the AWS console itself instead it needs to be downloaded on your system and then it can be analysed for further debugging. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
