Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) Overview

What is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you up to focus on your apps so you can give them the better performance, availability, security, and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on 6 familiar database instances: Amazon Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database and SQL Server engines. This means that the code, applications, and tools you already use today with your existing databases can be used with Amazon RDS. Amazon RDS automatically patches the database software and backs up your database, storing the backups for a user-defined retention period and enabling point-in-time recovery. You benefit from the flexibility of being able to scale the compute resources or storage capacity associated with your relational database instance via a single API call. In addition, Amazon RDS makes it easy to use replication to enhance availability and reliability for production databases. Amazon RDS for MySQL also enables you to scale out beyond the capacity of a single database deployment for read-heavy database workloads. As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no up-front investments required, and you pay only for the resources you use.

"Amazon RDS manages cloud database and ensures high availability."
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is an outstanding and powerful managed database service for the cloud where I can host my data, and it ensures the database is available with high efficiency. AWS manages the database, and I don't have to intervene in small tasks to improve the CPU utilization and memory consumption for the database.

The database can connect to many cloud applications and dashboards, and updating dashboard views is easy. I am using Postgres SQL hosted in RDS, where I can run queries for data analysis and automate data pipelines is also accessible using RDS as data is hosted in the same cluster. What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Hosting data on Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) can cause compliance issues if the server is not hosted in the same country per the client's location, as some countries have stricter laws for exporting data outside geographic boundaries. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Amazing managed service for hosting data in cloud."
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is a fantastic managed database in the cloud where I do not have to worry about managing and maintaining the database. It ensures 99.99% uptime with high reliability. Data is secure, and Amazon ensures the safety of the database.

I can provide the endpoints of the database in my applications and connect many applications such as web applications and data dashboards like Tableau dashboard to fetch data directly from Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS).

Data transfers are efficient as the Amazon ec2 and RDS instances are in the exact Oregon (US-West2) data centres. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) has been running very efficiently for us regarding speed and connectivity. Still, we must convince clients to keep crucial data in managed services hosted separately, not in the on-premise infrastructure. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

AWS RDS provides you with the unlimited storage, read replicas, multi AZ deployment, caching and can integrate with the AWS KMS service to secure your data that is the best thing about the RDS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

AWS RDS takes more processing time in comparison with the NOSQL document database dynamoDB. If schema is not important to you it will be always preferred to use dynamoDB over the RDS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Using RDS is one of the best decision we have made in our organisation."
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Being a managed service, RDS abstracts database management tasks such as hardware provisioning, setup, automated snapshots and backups, automated fail overs, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Some advanced database engine features takes time to become available in RDS, compared to using the engines directly. As everything is privisioned and managed by AWS like automated patches, updates and so on, it is abit costlier. Automatic storage scaling is also an issue. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Relational database your saviour"
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

I have been using RDS for more than four years now. What I have loved the most about it is it's easy accessibility, making connections in and out of it and additional features that are provided by Amazon. My favourite one is segregation of reader and writer instances. Using proxy to handle DB connections.

The very useful part is also detailed logging system that's implemented for ease. Absolutely amazing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

The auto scaling part for RDS. While I understand why vertical scaling is allowed but something I would change if I can. And the part where DB instances take more than usual time to come up. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
