Grantee

by Alyssa Towns
Grantees receive scholarships, awards, or other assets from donors, known as grantors. Learn about grantees and their relationships with grantors.

What is a grantee?

A grantee is a recipient of a scholarship, grant, or other assets. Grantees receive something valuable from a grantor. For instance, a grantee may claim title to a real estate property or obtain a scholarship to apply toward an academic semester.

Legal documents are essential in designating the transfer of assets between grantors and grantees. Grant management software streamlines the grant proposal and awarding process for grantmakers and grant seekers. Grantees use these tools to measure their progress throughout the process.

Legal documents specify the names of grantors and grantees and transfer assets or rights from one party to the other. Specifications outlined in the legal documents vary depending on the assets involved.

For example, deeds such as quitclaims, general warranties, and special warranties are often used in real estate transfers. Generally speaking, legal documents outline specific responsibilities, benefits, limitations, and duties of the grantor and the grantee.

Examples of grantor and grantee relationships

Some common types of grantor and grantee relationships are discussed below.

  • Governments and scholarship recipients: In this case, the government is the grantor, and the recipient is the grantee. Federal and state governments and colleges and universities award funds to scholarship recipients without expecting the recipient to repay the funds. Scholarship management software is often used for this process.
  • Landlord and tenant: Here, the landlord is the grantor, and the tenant is the grantee. The landlord grants the property to the tenant for a period of time.
  • Lender and borrower: The lender offers funds to the borrower with the expectation and agreement that the borrower will repay the funds.

Grantee vs. grantor

The grantee receives a scholarship, grant, or other assets such as real estate property. The grantor is the person or entity that conveys ownership of the asset to the grantee.
