"Best auto-completion intelligence for PHP & Javascript"
What do you like best about PhpStorm?
Where PHPStorm shines in comparison to the competition is how amazingly accurate, smart, and quick the auto-completions are, and how accurate it's refactoring tools are. It's the accumulation of what PHPStorm provides out of the box and the number of community plugins that I have installed, for frameworks that I write in i.e. Symfony and Angular 2, etc.
I can't say enough great things about how great PHPStorm performs refactoring operations; it does a very good job in updating references compared to other similar products.
Navigating through a PHP code-base is a breeze if you learn the right things; looking up by class name, file name, or any symbol is just a few keystrokes away.
As I have hinted, there are a lot of plugins available that you can install to extend what PHPStorm can do for you. I think a good IDE or code editor must have this level of extensibility in order to keep up with such the fast-evolving field that are programming languages, and PHPStorm's Plugin Repository really seem to have a diverse collection of plugins for frameworks, auxiliary technologies, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What do you dislike about PhpStorm?
Boot-up time can be quite slow, and indexing bogs down the application a bit, but they only happen rarely in my workflow that I rarely notice them.
There are various integrations that PHPStorm has that I personally think does too much, i.e. its Docker and Vagrant integration. I prefer PHPStorm not do much in those fronts and leave them to me in exchange for less resource consumption, but I understand that different people might prefer to let the application do the work.
With that said, I still find PHPStorm fast relative to the suite of functionality it provides. Comparing it to vim is just unfair; PHPStorm just does a lot more, and usually performs what it does rather fast.
