Byteboard Overview

What is Byteboard?

Byteboard has redesigned the interview experience to be more effective, efficient, and equitable for all. At its core, Byteboard provides two powerful tools rooted in project-based interview practices: CoreEval and CodeCollab, which seamlessly integrate to provide a comprehensive solution for hiring teams while offering candidates a great experience. ‍ CodeCollab, the newest product in the Byteboard portfolio, provides a familiar interface to conduct the virtual-onsite interview. A collaborative live coding environment, CodeCollab flows seamlessly from the CoreEval assessment, and includes interview guides and content to drive more equity and consistency–leading to a better candidate experience and better hires. Using a familiar IDE based on Visual Studio Code, CodeCollab allows hiring teams to paircode and collaborate on multi-file codebases, run, test, and debug code, understand candidate communication and problem-solving skills, and adapt follow-up questions on the fly. Hiring teams can use Byteboard’s ready-to-go materials within CodeCollab–or start from scratch with their own content and/or a pre-loaded code configuration template. Try CodeCollab for free at: https://www.byteboard.dev/code-collab#Signup CoreEval offers project-based take-home assessments using real-work artifacts to evaluate candidates’ skills relevant to the job. Designed to replace technical phone screen rounds, CoreEval assessments include technical reasoning exercises and code implementation tasks to evaluate candidates across various domains, including fullstack engineering, staff backend engineering, applied AI and data engineering. Through these exercises, candidates can demonstrate skills like systems reasoning, clean code, trade-off analysis, and 20+ other domain-specific skills in a practical and familiar environment. Hiring Managers and recruiters receive an overall recommendation, alongside a detailed report on the candidate’s strengths and areas of opportunity. This helps teams quickly and effectively determine whether a candidate should advance to the next stage of the interview process, typically the virtual-onsite interview. Google Byteboard

Description

Google Byteboard is a technical assessment platform designed to streamline the hiring process for software engineers. Byteboard provides realistic, project-based assessments that evaluate technical and soft skills in a more comprehensive manner than traditional coding tests. It aims to create a fairer and more efficient hiring process by focusing on practical, on-the-job skills rather than the ability to solve abstract algorithm challenges. This allows companies to identify candidates who are truly job-ready.

What do you like best about Byteboard?

Real time run code in the test UI is both a blessing and a curse -- the curse part being that it compels you to keep typing in running code as fast as possible, even when the test objective is to show design considerations and not final code. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

While better than most technical interviews, and suppressing pasting from outside test tabs is understandable in the age of AI hype, copy and paste should still be permissible within the same tab of the design comment input interface, especially when fillable comment cards move unpredictably around the canvas upon click events. I definitely got a couple of false negative answers due to this core UX problem combined with the artificial time limits, which also triggered without any warning. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

It really just creates another convenient screening barrier for unsophisticated hiring managers, and doesn't do a lot to ease stress for the interviewee other than being closer to a real-world IDE than a whiteboard or a Google Doc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

The time limits were a bit tight. But all in all, no major complaints. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

I was an interviewer and it was used to get some technical signal on me. It prevents me from having to study Leetcode nonsense—which has nothing to do with day to day work. Allows me to interview as I am and not have to wait 6+ weeks until I'm "Leetcode ready". Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Byteboard?

We have used Byteboard for a number of positions. Having used several assessment tools, I haven't found one that simulates on-the-job performance nearly as well as Byteboard. Our team has also used Byteboard assessments for non-coding positions, such as a product manager. Candidates seem to enjoy the process more than other assessment tools. And for us, it's a great way to gague how a candidate will approach challenges in the wild. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

I wish there was more customizability with the assessments, though to be fair, whenever we have contacted the Byteboard team they have helped us customize the assessments to our requirements. But, it would be nice if we could do so within the Byteboard platform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

Determining the problem-solving skills for candidates we are hiring into technical and product-focused roles. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Byteboard?

I got interviewed for a Senior Software Engineer role and solved a task on a web application on Byteboard platform.

The interviewing experience was seamless. Clean UI and flow. Hope more and more tech platforms use Byteboard for evaluating candidates. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

Alghough I didn't experience any issues, I feel adding an alert few minutes before allocated time is elapsed will be very useful. That will help to avoid last minute changes that may bring issues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

As an interviewee it makes the interview experience pleasant. Hope that helps the organisations as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Byteboard?

Byteboard makes it easier to get initial interview rounds through, since we don't need to have an engineer host the interview (and take time to write feedback). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

Byteboard did not have customizable questions, which is important for Figma. And we also value face-to-face time as a way to humanize the interview process and engage candidates more. I've also seen candidates that have gone through on-sites because of a strong passing score in Byteboard but they did poorly on all of their coding interviews. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

Byteboard helps to give time back to more engineers since they don't have to spend as much time prepping, interviewing, and writing feedback. As an engineer, I get more time to do my work! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Juliana Suarez of Byteboard

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Byteboard as we work to continue building a product that truly solves for your needs. While Byteboard aims to create a standardized and repeatable process so candidates are measured fairly and consistently for a role, we also understand that different organizations may need to tailor questions to meet the custom needs or skill sets of a specific role.

We appreciate you notifying us after seeing some false positives onsite. We are constantly working to improve the validity of our assessments and we recently upgraded our rating prediction engine to minimize such false positives and ensure that you are spending your time with the right candidates onsite.

We’re also working on a live interview solution so you can engage with candidates face-to-face while also getting the benefits of Byteboard’s project-based assessments. We would be excited to have you pilot these features for your next round of interviews. Please feel free reach out to our team directly or via sales@byteboard.dev and we can work with you to get this up for your account.

What do you like best about Byteboard?

The Byteboard assessment assesses for actual engineering and coding skills, versus traditional coding interviews that assess for how much you've practiced for the test. This gives employers better signal on candidates' technical skills. Byteboard also provides a great candidate experience! We've had many candidates tell us that they loved taking a test that measures actual skills. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

So far, we've been very happy with Byteboard! No complaints! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

It's an effective first-stage filter, helping to save thousands of hours of engineer interview time while also ensuring thorough vetting at that early stage of the interview process. Byteboard is a great predictor of future interview success. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

How holistic the assessment is with reviewing soft and technical skills, and how it accurately reflects a candidate's skills. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Byteboard?

Dislike isn't the right word, but it would be helpful to have more contact with the graders in improving our own calibration on assessments YoY. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Byteboard solving and how is that benefiting you?

It's saved us hundreds of interview hours, mitigates bias, and has been a huge help in increasing representation across pipelines. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
