Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) Overview

What is Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you up to focus on your apps so you can give them the better performance, availability, security, and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on 6 familiar database instances: Amazon Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database and SQL Server engines. This means that the code, applications, and tools you already use today with your existing databases can be used with Amazon RDS. Amazon RDS automatically patches the database software and backs up your database, storing the backups for a user-defined retention period and enabling point-in-time recovery. You benefit from the flexibility of being able to scale the compute resources or storage capacity associated with your relational database instance via a single API call. In addition, Amazon RDS makes it easy to use replication to enhance availability and reliability for production databases. Amazon RDS for MySQL also enables you to scale out beyond the capacity of a single database deployment for read-heavy database workloads. As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no up-front investments required, and you pay only for the resources you use.

What do you like best about AWS Cloud?

The security highlights of AWS are additionally amazing. With broad consistence confirmations, hearty encryption choices, and underlying safety efforts, I can believe that my applications and information are very much safeguarded.

Additionally exceptionally simple to carry out and can be in quite a few different ways offering support for numourous dialects like nodejs, python.etc. It might be said you are simply writing in funtion, that is the reason it is in many cases called lambda funtions. "Really enjoying using AWS RDS as a DevOps engineer in my daily routine work!"
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

In our organisation we are heavily dependant on using RDS as it backs-up, takes updates and handle huge databases with ease. It has helped in freeing up our time as DevOps engineers to do other work. I like how its self managed to certain extent and can scale up or down depending on traffic. Security is also a key feature i would like to highlight as my organisation is a Fin-Tech company and security is a big deal for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Main downside of RDS for us is the cost. Optimising the cost caused can be a bit tricky for new bies. Even tho its easy to integrate, for new joiners it can be bit difficult to troubleshoot issues sometimes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) Security Features"
What do you like best about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

Relational databases stored in the cloud benefit from the extensive security measures provided by Amazon RDS, ensuring their integrity and protection. Encryption stands out as a key feature, supported both during data transfer and storage within Amazon RDS. This means that data within the database is shielded using industry-standard encryption methods, safeguarding it from unauthorized access. Likewise, data transmitted between client applications and the database is encrypted, maintaining its confidentiality during network communication. Moreover, RDS instances operate within Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), allowing users to customize access controls within their network environment. By default, RDS instances are isolated from public networks, minimizing exposure to external threats. This combination of encryption and network isolation enhances the security posture of Amazon RDS and AWS, ensuring the protection of sensitive data Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?

While Amazon RDS boasts an array of security features, it's crucial to consider certain factors. Firstly, its managed nature implies that users have limited control over the underlying infrastructure, which might pose challenges for organizations requiring precise control over network configurations and security protocols. Moreover, opting for Amazon RDS could result in vendor lock-in, as transitioning away from the AWS ecosystem can be intricate. Cost considerations are paramount as well, given that usage-based pricing can accumulate, especially for large-scale deployments. Furthermore, although features like Multi-AZ deployments ensure high availability, constraints in availability zones for specific features may hamper deployment flexibility. The reliance on AWS IAM for access control adds another layer of consideration, particularly for organizations with existing identity management solutions. Lastly, there might be a learning curve for users unfamiliar with AWS services or database administration, necessitating investments in training and expertise. Despite these potential drawbacks, Amazon RDS remains an attractive option for numerous organizations owing to its robust security features and managed services offerings Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
