What's an easy way to project a 3D shape onto a flat surface, without Sandbox breaking the geometry?

When I project a 3D geometry onto a flat surface using the sandbox tools, it breaks the geometry at corners. This makes bringing topo lines from CAD into Sketchup for modeling very difficult.
