I have no idea how other employers recognize their employees. I can only speak for my department here at WellSpan, there is not a lot of opportunity for advancement in the lab. We have a "level" program but it's not really talked about. If you ask new employees in the lab what does it mean to be a Tech II, Tech III, or a Tech IV they would not know. In fact a new phlebotomist at York Hospital in conversation had no idea about the levels. Why excel at your job when there is nothing to strive for. There is such a high turn over for phlebotomist here at York Hospital because most people think of it as a stepping stone and not a permanent career. When I first started here 10 years ago it was not like this. Full-time positions rarely became available because people stayed. Not anymore and that needs to be looked at by Leadership.
