That's a pretty difficult question to answer. As a long-time Woocommerce user, and a user of several other e-commerce based CMS and/or e-commerce plugin modules, Woocommerce has a lot going for it. You can run a pretty complex, full-featured online store with Wordpress and just the free core Woocommerce plugin. There are also scores of free plugins that can extend capabilities and hundreds of paid plugins that do the same. Probably it's best feature is the tight integration with Wordpress.
That said, there are half-a-dozen other capable E-commerce CMS available that designed from the ground up for e-commerce, meaning they aren't a plugin or extra module on top of a base CMS. Whether that's good, bad or indifferent really depends on your store, number of products, needed features etc.
But I've found Woocommerce to be amazing, and with so many installations out there, there are always lots of people available to help answer questions, share their experience with fixes or troubleshooting etc.
WooCommerce is the most popular WordPress eCommerce plugin. And it's available for free. Packed full of features, perfectly integrated into your self-hosted WordPress website.
