The camera is only used for proctoring reasons, and only if it is a requirement from the user. In other words, the test creator can determine the stringency of the proctoring, and one of the ways to do that is by choosing to take candidate snapshots while the test is being attempted.
Yes you have to keep your camera on when appearing for assessment. For demo assessments no need to switch on camera. But for realtime assessments if you stop camera in between then your exam gets stopped immediately until you resume your camera action.
