What is the best way to make sure you do not mess up your formulas?

Sometimes when I paste values it still messes with my formula and the way it pulls information doesnt work.

You will return to the cell with the incorrect formula, in edit mode, and then Excel will highlight the part where the problem occurs in the formula. If you still don't know what to do from there and want to start over, you can press ESC again, or select the Cancel button on the formula bar, which will take you out of edit mode.
