“It's worth it even if you're not a big company.”
What do you like best about NX CAD?

The oft-advanced notion that the advantages of NX are mainly about "free-form stuff" is false. Even if you're primarily doing work involving traditional machined parts (as I do), the toolset in NX allows for faster workflows both in concept and in production design. Equally importantly, the toolset in NX enables quick accommodation and steering of late-breaking concept and scope changes, which is a great factor regarding client satisfaction (and thus repeat business). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about NX CAD?

There's seemingly "basic" functionality that requires costly extra licenses in NX, which can be irritating sometimes. But it's understandable given the stability and quality of the system in general, as well as the frequency with which useful enhancements get added -- obviously, the NX software development is at a very high level and this has to cost something. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is NX CAD solving and how is that benefiting you?

My clients want the freedom to course and scope several times during their projects, sometimes drastically, and NX is simply a superior tool for working their wishes in quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

“The Best CAD Program Out There”
What do you like best about Onshape?

I’ve been using Onshape for over six years and have logged more than 2,000 hours in the platform—and it still impresses me. The interface is clean and intuitive, and the feature set is powerful enough to handle complex design work without feeling overwhelming.

What really sets Onshape apart is its collaborative workflow. Real-time sharing, version control, and branching make working with others seamless, whether you're in the same room or halfway around the world. One feature I especially appreciate is Follow Mode—being able to follow someone’s cursor as they work through a model makes collaboration and review incredibly efficient. It’s the next best thing to sitting side-by-side. As First Robotics Mentor, this feature allows me to follow my students' work in real-time and recognise where they are struggling to better support them on their way to becoming Onshape masters. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

While I love onshape, it is missing a few features that would be useful and keep me from using for every project. Two that come to mind are 3D sketching and surface tools like patching and scultping. Some projects I have encountered recently have required some surface editing. And having a tool that allows for dimension driven surface editing would be incredibly helpful. I edit lots of files from imports and I would love to use onshape for this but it is a noticable weakpoint. Many of the Loft feature that i use to generate surfaces from sketchs often break with the complex geometry I attemp to create with them. 3D sketches would also be incredibly helpful for bridging curves and completing complex surface boundaries. I would also like be able to add points in a part studio with out needing a sketch plane. Just a point that I can use to pattern parts, or connect lines to certain locations would be helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?

Onshape gives me a very accessible studio for all of my projects that I never have to worry about saving or losing in files on my device. The cloud based network is crucial to my workflow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

“Versatile and Essential Tool for 3D Design”
What do you like best about SketchUp?

One of the standout aspects of SketchUp is its versatility. Whether I’m designing architectural models, creating interior layouts, or visualizing landscaping projects, SketchUp allows me to bring my ideas to life quickly and accurately. The program’s vast library of pre-made components and textures also speeds up the design process and enhances creativity. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about SketchUp?

While SketchUp excels in many areas, there are a few drawbacks, especially when it comes to 3D printing. The software isn’t specifically designed for creating models intended for 3D printing, which can lead to issues like non-manifold geometry, overlapping faces, or gaps in the model. These issues often require additional time for troubleshooting and fixing before a model is ready for printing.

Additionally, the precision tools in SketchUp, while sufficient for many design tasks, can sometimes feel limiting when exact measurements and tolerances are critical for 3D printing. This can result in models that don’t print as intended without further refinement in more specialized 3D printing software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is SketchUp solving and how is that benefiting you?

SketchUp solves several key problems in the design process, particularly in visualization and communication. One of the biggest challenges in architecture and design is translating complex ideas into clear, visual representations that clients and collaborators can easily understand. SketchUp’s intuitive interface and powerful modeling tools allow me to quickly create detailed 3D models, making it easier to convey design concepts and explore different options in real time. “It is flawless...”
What do you like best about GeoSTORM?

I have taken at least four courses on PCSWMM, and yet I still find it difficult to tackle some workflows. Geostorm is like working with a LEGO model, although I must agree with one previous reviewer that adding catch basins to the pipe instead of a model is quite awkward. That is a SWMM flaw, not a GEOSTORM flaw. Some other wrappers have worked around that, and with good reason. I believe that CivilGEO would like to cover all EPASWMM bases before tweaking the actual model, and that is completely understandable. You have to walk before you run, but my first work with GEOStorm was a gigantic solar farm that covered an entire town, draining to a river that was also modeled in GEOStorm. I tried Autodesk's Infoworks, and I don't understand why a flood model needs to look like a relational database.

GEOStorm will be your best bet if results are what you are after. The problem with most of these other programs is that they fail to prioritize the user experience. If you need to gather rainfall, streamflow, terrain, land cover, and soil data before laying out your model, you are already a couple of days behind, and most importantly, you will be tired before you start modeling. See, I look forward to working with CivilGeo's tools. It is that engaging, and that in itself is a battle won. The most difficult part of any project is getting started, and CivilGEO's products invite you to do just that. When was the last time you were eager to work? You have to experience it, because you have three options;

1 - Work slowly

2- Have a battery of Python scripts that can pull all that data for you. (Good luck maintaining that library for a few users.)

3-Use Geostorm

Five years ago, I wasn't sure if I would continue with my career in water resources. I was getting tired and bored. CivilGEO is one of the main reasons that I continued, and for that, I am grateful.

If you cannot relate to that, the same thing happened to me on the other side of my professional career, land development, some ten to twelve years ago. Learning Civil3D changed that.

Many people are familiar with CAD, and a significant number are also familiar with GIS. It is the common ground and the intersection of these two that makes things go right. CivilGEO understands that. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GeoSTORM?

Not a 2D solver yet, but that is coming, so not much. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GeoSTORM solving and how is that benefiting you?

Like I said, it is the common ground between GIS and CAD and the ability to switch seamlessly between the two. I don't know of anybody else paying myuch attention to that. While the reality is that most water resources dayly issues live at that scale that could be defined as the common ground between these two. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Inventor?

Inventor is my go-to tool for machine design; From design accelators, frame generators and analysis, to design automation with ilogic features , and dynamic event simulation with a powerful solver etc.

Inventor's featuers are very mature in terms of capacity, and can handle data of so many kinds e.g it BOM, driving configuration with parameter etc.

Inventor also integrates perfectly with PDM tools like Autodesk Vault for administrative purposes, design data managment, file control, to mention a few.

Many other solutions can be integarted with inventor, making it possible to author, validate, fabricate and test your design e.g Inventor Nastran, Inventor Nesting, Factory design utilities, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Inventor?

You need to master how planes work, if you intend to asemble your parts and components easily, simulating real world relationship between the parts via the asssembly enviroment.

You need to fully understand assembly modeling especially if you are working on a large project with over a thousand part. etc

You need to understand the file structuring and basic file handling within inventor, else you would run into constant erros trying to reuse or locate design files. Sometimes the errors can cost you the clients trust if not managed properly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Inventor solving and how is that benefiting you?

The ilogic feature in inventor basically hands me the power to automate my design, create variations and initaite design configurationns in a controlled manner. This leads to my ability to meet clients need in the shortest possible time.

Adopting Inventor for my product design workflow makes the entire experince smooth. I am giving the ability to implement and insert fastners, mechanical weldments, belt and chain drives, mechanical frames an others, through calculated, and analysis-based processes, thus making informed design decisions.

Basically, an ADMS console is required to set up a server, then an Autodesk vault client is set up for authoring of design data into the sever, via dedicated file structures. All i did was to link Inventor to my Autodesk vault, then all my designs from inventor was easily checked in and out of the vault, ensuring proper design documentation , control, and secuirty, to mention a few. AM
“Altium has a steep learning curve but very capable for mechanical design integration.”
What do you like best about Altium Designer?

The MCAD CoDesigner functionality has been very useful for integrating PCB designs into our mechanical 3D models in AutoDesk Inventor, and was a big reason we moved to Altium. The 3D views are very useful within Altium and creating PCB footprints and adding existing STEP files available from many component manufacturers is easy. The OutJob functionality is useful in exporting files.

The Draftsman documents are very powerful and have saved a significant amount of time in creating and updating production documentation. The layout capability works very well with a lot of configurability.

The ActiveBOM functionality is useful is checking part status and availability and for rolling up BOM cost.

Overall, Altium was an enormous leap from Mentor Graphics PADS (which I used for the previous 15 years), although now there are a number of other alternatives, including at least one open-source alternative that also has impressive capability (I have not explored these in detail).

Electronic design (schematic capture and layout) only makes up 10% of my working hours according to my time logging (among mechanical design, project planning, as well as customer, sales, and production support), but I am quite productive in Altium compared to my previous workflow. If this was my primary job function, I would be even more comfortable in the software as it is certainly designed with the "power user" in mind, but there are many things I don't remember or haven't needed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Altium Designer?

The file management and revision control is complex and difficult for a simple file-based guy like me to understand (I only dabble in software so I am not very familiar with digital version control systems) so I'm probably doing it wrong. It's nice to have the online project viewing functionality to be able to share with coworkers who don't have a seat of Altium.

I haven't figured out how to show manufacturer and MPN on a schematic, outside of the MPN assigned in the "Comment" field of a library component. It seems like this should be easy to pull from the part already set up in the "Part Choices" area.

PCB Outline editing capability is awkward. I usually end up importing from a 3D model but it's not intuitive (I end up needing to look up the process each time I do it).

Draftsman, while powerful, has limited flexibility in some ways (for instance, I'd like to have control of opacity for hatched shapes so I can show a conformal coat masking area). It would be nice to be able to do some parametric drawing, but it is adequate for what I need.

Import of files made in PADS (what we transitioned from) is quite difficult, mostly from a component library standpoint. I ended up starting over from scratch in some cases.

We recently added another seat for a new hire, and it was a chore to get him set up and the license assigned (I was confused between roles in the 365 project environment and Altium itself). Support was able to get this sorted out quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Altium Designer solving and how is that benefiting you?

Altium allows import of 3D models into our mechanical design software, which our previous software could not do. This has greatly improved our electromechanical design process (mechanical components moving past sensors mounted to the PCB, and avoiding collisions between moving parts and large PCB components).

The Draftsman feature has significantly improved our production documentation process. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Civil 3D?

It helps make designs for civil engineering projects faster and more accurate. What I like most are its customizable designs and tools, which make difficult processes like grading, roadway design, and pipe networks easier. Using GIS data and tools to create surfaces and terrains also makes the work more comfortable for me. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Civil 3D?

What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?

Creating manual designs and grading can be a time-intensive and complex process that requires precision and attention to detail. Civil 3D, however, revolutionizes this by automating many of these tasks and providing tools that streamline workflows. Its features enable engineers to design surfaces, create grading plans, and simulate real-world conditions with greater accuracy and efficiency. By reducing manual calculations and repetitive tasks, Civil 3D allows engineers to focus more on problem-solving and innovation, ultimately making their work more productive and their projects more successful. “Easier and faster than other CAD programs for general design but still powerful for complex models”
What do you like best about IronCAD?

IronCAD has several ways of doing the same thing so it is super easy to learn even for people with no previous CAD experience. Power users can when needed use the same technique as in the competitor's programs so it's not limited to just one way of working. I have stayed with IronCAD for 23 years and I have seen over the years how the competitors mimic things that have always been possible in IronCAD.

It can do everything we need at our company, including the creation of advanced corrugated boxes with correct consideration of inside loss and more.

We have also started using it for design of thermo formed trays and it works quite well. There is some improvements needed in this area but IronCAD is working hard to create those improvements.

The programming API is well developed and we have created a large number of plugins ourselves. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IronCAD?

It doesn't have as many options to offer as the competitors when it comes to solution partners for CAM, FEA and so on. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is IronCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?

It has parametric capability for quick creation of common models and these models are easily accessed from catalogs. On top of that, it also has attachment points and which makes it very fast to attach and configure several parametric models together.

At least 50% of our modeling is custom made and we can do that several times faster than in any other CAD program using Innovative parts, handles and Triball. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
