SSMS (SQL server Management Studio) can run nicely from your PC or on the server itself.
SQL server 2014 has the DROP IF EXISTS command which is great

Microsoft's flavour of SQL is tried and tested and works excellent
Windows Server 2012 has an excellent Hyper V virtualization server and 2012 can be the host or the VM OS.
