SQL query tuning. Great. Simple interface, easy to use and review performance. Query performance allows historical details which is a great feature. It's able to identify performance issues quickly. The tool captures execution time by using the plan hash – which works fine for read queries, but for transactional DML, it's likely that most of the time it is the COMMIT TRAN that takes the bulk of the wait time (WRITELOG wait) – as there is no plan for a COMMIT, DPA doesn’t capture the stats for it, so it can’t be used to determine if an increase in wait time is the result of higher executions, or something else. Given that execution times and execution counts for the stored procs (containing the ‘COMMIT TRAN’ statements to which I refer above) are available in the DMV, I asked Solarwinds if they were planning to address this and their response was that “there is nothing to fix”/”speak to Microsoft”.

My favorite thing about Solarwinds Database Performance Analyzer is the simple interface. We use the data base performance analyser from Solarwind to monitor all of our environments for performance problems affecting our SQL databases. This software helps us to identify real-time performance problems such as errors, long-running queries or problems that are blocking the system. There's no better tool to analyze server statistics. There are not a lot of thinks I dislike about Solarwinds Database Performance Analyzer, but one of them is that it has problems when you switch across domains. I would also prefer to have different dashboards for job performances, task creation and parameter tuning.
