What is the best way to backup / upload external hard drive quickly that does not involve shipping?

Uploading from internal hard drive is very fast, but from external hard drive is much slower.

I've just uploaded over 1TB of data from an external HD and it took about 4 days, which I thought was reasonable. Maybe the speed differs based on the connection - USB2 or USB3
