How does Basecamp scale for large project groups?

Because of its customizability I think it works pretty well for large organizations - for a smaller team I'd recommend something lightweight like Trello but when you want to track many issues for many users, it's really great to have reliable search and the ability to track thousands of variables/dates/releases at once, Basecamp is well worth the effort to set up.
