It depends on what your needs are. I've worked with both Check Point and Fortinet, and both have a place. In a smaller IT shop (where you may not need some of the advanced NGFW features like sandboxing) Fortinets are good, effective, low-admin cost firewalls. However, if you are in a larger IT shop (Enterprise IT), Check Point and Palo Alto would be more appropriate.
When it comes to perimeter protection Checkpoint and Palo is the best option with cost involve, it is best suitable for financial or corporate environments, I used to work with Checkpoint firewalls so my personal preference is Checkpoint but it requires highly technical knowledge to configure the ssetup
