Short answer - Salesforce is a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system but on steroids. A smaller version would be Zoho CRM.
Salesforce at its core allows you to manage your contacts and customer base within its system. In doing so, you can store customer accounts, contacts, files, agreements and so on to each customer (record) allowing you and your staff to easily manage. This is where automation comes into play, enabling you to create triggers and workflows so you can be more efficient allowing you to simplify/expedite those repetitive tasks.
Obviously, there is much more but like I mentioned, at its core it is used to manage business relations and the data/information associated with it.
Moving past the basics of Salesforce, they have an array of apps/products they offer people, such as Marketing Cloud, Heroku, Einstein, Sales Cloud and much more. Many of these apps/products have been developed or acquired via acquisition over the last 6-7 years. Salesforce also offers an AppExchange, similar the Apple App Store, but for Business related apps, rather than consumer.
So what can you do with Salesforce? The bounds are really endless, but it will come down to how much time and money you want to invest. When do correctly, Salesforce is amazing and overtop efficient. When built poorly, well...just don't go down that road.
Companies like Facebook, American Express, ADP, Addias, Amazon, Yeti, TransAmerica, Canon and more all use Salesforce in many different ways. You can see that these companies are diverse in their business vertical and Salesforce can be used almost anywhere.
I would strongly suggest touring around the Salesforce.com website.
