The e-commerce software market experienced significant changes in the past quarter caused by market corrections, changes in buyer behavior, and supply chain challenges. To understand how these changes impacted users, I analyzed the most recent G2 e-commerce reports data for fall 2022.
Who’s who in G2’s fall 2022 e-commerce reports
While G2 has 26 categories for e-commerce, I focused on the 10 most popular based on traffic. Since there can be hundreds of products in each category, I first looked at the top five products for each of the 10 categories, then analyzed the average satisfaction by category.
Top five e-commerce products according to G2 reviewers
One may think that popular products like Shopify or Salesforce Commerce Cloud dominate many categories. However, the table below shows this is not the case. On the contrary, almost every category has different products in its top five, which shows the high level of specialization in each market segment.
As you can see, the top five products in Product Information Management (PIM) are entirely different from those in E-Commerce Platforms or E-Commerce Personalization. Not to mention niche emerging markets such as Drop Shipping, E-Commerce Search, and Installment Payments And Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), where the top products are not traditional e-commerce solutions like Shopify or BigCommerce.
While the top five products by category hardly changed compared to previous reports, in the summer of 2022, other products experienced significant positive and negative rank changes.
- For e-commerce platforms, Zoho Commerce moved up 16 spots (25th to 8th).
- Also for e-commerce platforms, Shopware (from 23rd to 12th), Spryker Cloud Commerce OS (21st to 10th), and Zoey (59th to 43rd).
- In the payment gateways category, Zaakpay (from 29th to 13th).
On the flip side, the most significant rank decreases were experienced in the E-Commerce Platforms category:
- Oracle Commerce is down 39 spots from 9th to 48th.
- SAP Commerce Cloud is down 23 places from 30th to 53rd.
At the same time, in our category for E-Commerce Platforms, 47 products had lower ratings than in the summer of 2022, and only 8 improved their rankings.
It is not surprising that most changes happened in this category since it’s the most popular on g2.com, so I wanted to take a closer look at it and find other insights that may be valuable to buyers and sellers.
E-commerce platforms category overview
Other than the rank changes mentioned above, it is worth noting that the most notable absences from the top five list for e-commerce platforms were Adobe Commerce, Oracle Commerce, and SAP Commerce. While these are essential players in e-commerce, their ranks in the fall Grid report were 7th, 48th, and 63rd, respectively.
Also, the top five e-commerce platforms varied by reviewer company size. While Shopify has the highest rank in all segments, Salesforce and Netsuite were in the top five for mid-market and enterprise. Also, two of the top products for small businesses, Ecwid and BigCommerce, are not in the top five for mid-market and enterprise.
Furthermore, there were 72 products in the Grid® Report for E-Commerce Platforms | Fall 2022, with G2 scores varying from 19 to 99. Given that the G2 score depends on the market presence of a product and its satisfaction rating and market presence are relatively constant, satisfaction varied significantly by product, from 2 to 99 points.
These variations and the rank changes mentioned above may be explained by the fact that the e-commerce market is going through challenging times. As described in my previous e-commerce news recap, e-commerce growth is slowing, and important players like Shopify had to lay off employees, which may have an impact on the performance and quality of their products, which ultimately impacts satisfaction.
Note: The G2 score, market presence, and satisfaction score are calculated based on a detailed research methodology that includes multiple factors. A few examples are the number of employees and social presence for market presence, as well as NPS, review quality, and reviewer feedback for satisfaction. The E-Commerce Platforms category perfectly exemplifies the complexity of the e-commerce market. The 72 products included in the reports are only a portion of the 300 solutions listed in the category, not to mention other commerce categories such as shopping cart with 231 products or e-commerce personalization with 204.
